Marine Science
Village View’s Marine Science program immerses students in hands-on exploration of ocean life and ecology.
The on-campus dry lab provides space for investigations into topics such as marine habitats, water quality, and specimen identification. To enhance these lessons, local aquariums partner with the school to bring living marine exhibits directly to campus, enabling authentic “wet lab” experiments. Together, these experiences spark curiosity, foster environmental awareness, and encourage scientific inquiry in young learners.
What are the Ocean Literacy PrinciplesOur marine science program is grounded in Ocean Literacy Principles, which serve as a framework to ensure every lesson connects students with the core concepts of ocean science. By embedding these principles into class activities, we guide students to explore topics such as the interconnectedness of marine ecosystems, the ocean’s influence on climate and weather, human impacts on marine environments, and the importance of stewardship. Each investigation—whether in the dry lab or through hands-on wet lab experiences with our visiting aquariums—is designed to illustrate these fundamental ideas in a tangible, age-appropriate way.
Ocean Literacy Principles
- The Earth has one big ocean with many features.
- The ocean and life in the ocean shape the features of the Earth.
- The ocean is a major influence on weather and climate.
- The ocean makes Earth habitable.
- The ocean supports a great diversity of life and ecosystems.
- The ocean and humans are inextricably interconnected.
- The ocean is largely unexplored.
